It’s not uncommon for a slugger to get under a pitcher’s skin, but it hurts a little more when that hitter is a rookie. That’s exactly what seemed to happen during Saturday night’s Yankees vs. A’s matchup, when New York reliever Ian Hamilton had a tense moment with Oakland’s rookie Jacob Wilson.
It happened during the seventh inning, Wilson hit a ground-ball single that loaded the bases. As he made his way to first, cameras caught Hamilton turning to stare him down and gesturing for him to run. The incident quickly went viral on social media, with fans curious about what Hamilton exactly said.

“I was having a bad inning,” Ian Hamilton admitted. “A little emotional… then I kind of looked in at him and told him to run. He just wasn’t running out of the box. I was upset with the inning, and then that was that. He asked me what I said, and I just walked off.”
Clarke Schmidt And Ian Hamilton Fail To Help The Yankees Win

That moment capped off what turned into a difficult night for the Yankees, who fell 7-0 to Oakland. Starter Clarke Schmidt had his 28.2 innings scoreless streak snapped by homers from Brent Rooker and Nick Kurtz, his first multi-run allowed since April. He surrendered four earned runs over six innings, walking two and striking out seven.
Ian Hamilton was unable to do much while Aaron Judge went 0-for-4 as the Bronx Bombers managed only three hits.
