A league-shattering trade proposal has the New York Yankees acquiring Pittsburgh Pirates All-Star pitcher Paul Skenes in a move that would assure them of World Series banners Nos. 28 and 29, possibly more.
Paul Skenes is having a superb individual sophomore season, with a 2.15 ERA and 77 strikeouts in 75.1 innings. Opposing hitters are batting just .187 off Skenes, but the lack of run support has his record at 4-5. That shows how much the Pirates are letting him down with a weak roster.
Though Skenes is under contract through 2028, his name has frequently surfaced in trade rumors this month. Not only because the Pirates would get a mammoth haul in return, but owner Bob Nutting is notoriously cheap and certainly won’t pay Skenes the record-setting deal he’s worth in 2029.
Sam Bernardi of Heavy Sports proposed a blockbuster trade idea that has the Yankees acquiring Paul Skenes from the Pirates in exchange for starting pitcher Luis Gil (currently on the injured list) and the Yankees’ Nos. 2 and 3 ranked prospects by MLB.com: Outfielder Spencer Jones and pitcher Ben Hess.
Even with ace Gerrit Cole out for the year, the Yankees’ rotation remains one of the best in baseball. Free agent pickup Max Fried is 7-0 with an insane 1.29 ERA, and two-time All-Star Carlos Rodón is 7-3 with a 2.60 ERA.
If the Yankees added Skenes to the mix, they would cement themselves as the team to beat. The talent level would be so high that the Pinstripes could just go ahead and plan for multiple championship banners.

The Pirates may be forced to trade Skenes down the rush, but there’s absolutely zero rush to do so. He’s under contract for three more years, and the Pirates need to stay focused on building a winner around Skenes instead of beginning another tear-it-all-down rebuild.
