Anthony Volpe is having a terrible run, and things aren’t getting any better. A new stat might push things over the edge, and Yankees fans are beyond frustrated with the team’s shortstop.
In the Yankees’ 11-9 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays on Wednesday, the 24-year-old shortstop tied for the MLB lead in runners left on base with 150, matching Phillies outfielder Nick Castellanos. It’s the latest red flag in what has been a rocky season for Volpe, both at the plate and in the field.

While the stat initially showed 151, it was later corrected to 150, as his final plate appearance resulted in a double play, leaving only one runner on base to end the inning.
His most recent outing against the Toronto Blue Jays only made matters worse. Volpe committed two costly errors in a 5-4 loss. One was a rushed throw on a grounder that allowed runners to advance, and the other came on a failed attempt to throw out Ernie Clement, leading to a bases-loaded situation that swung the game.
Add that to his league-worst 11 errors in 83 games, and it’s no surprise that fan patience is running thin.

Anthony Volpe is currently averaging .224 with nine home runs and 44 RBIs. He recently went through a brutal 0-for-24 slump, and his high strikeout rate and poor contact numbers have only added to fans’ frustration.
For Aaron Boone, Volpe may be a long-term piece, but his struggles are now costing the Bronx Bombers games. While fans have run out of patience, the question is, will the Yankees front office feel the same way?
