It’s been a season to forget for Anthony Volpe, and on Saturday, it got worse. The 24-year-old shortstop recently received a huge backlash from fans for costing the Yankees a game against the Toronto Blue Jays.
He was once again under hot water after he accidentally injured Aaron Judge with a throw between innings in the Yankees’ 12-6 loss to the New York Mets.
The incident happened after the end of 4th inning. Volpe casually flipped the ball toward Judge, not realizing that the slugger wasn’t looking. The ball struck Judge near the eye, knocking off his sunglasses and drawing blood.

Luckily, the injury wasn’t serious, allowing Judge to continue in the game. While the captain brushed off the incident, fans were once again in meltdown mode.

Anthony Volpe Redeems Himself With A Solo Homer In Yankees’ Loss

Volpe did redeem himself briefly as he managed a solo home run late in the game. However, it was one of the few bright spots in an otherwise forgettable performance. Volpe went just 1-for-4 on the night as the Yankees suffered their sixth consecutive loss.
The 2025 has turned out to be a struggle for Volpe so far. Through 88 games, Volpe is hitting .222 with 10 home runs, 47 RBIs, and an OBP of .300. Once deemed as the Yankees’ shortstop of the future, he has now become one of their biggest liabilities, especially on defense. He currently leads the American League with 11 errors, several of which have come at crucial moments in the game.
With the way his season is going, the Yankees could be forced to make a tough call ahead of the trade deadline.
