Another day, another setback for the New York Yankees’ rotation.
Just hours before Saturday’s matchup against the Tampa Bay Rays, the Yankees announced that Clarke Schmidt had been scratched from his scheduled start. In his place, Ryan Yarbrough was called up for a spot start, adding yet another twist to an already messy pitching situation in the Bronx.
Schmidt has been dealing with minor soreness since his last outing. An MRI showed no serious issues, and he’s expected to return to the rotation on Tuesday against the San Diego Padres.
Notably, this is the second time Schmidt has missed games this season due to injury. He previously recovered from right rotator cuff tendinitis.
Pitching Curse Continues

Clarke Schmidt’s replacement, Ryan Yarbrough, has been steady. The lefty comes in with a 3.86 ERA this season, mainly working out of the bullpen. He entered the rotation on regular rest, having last pitched on Monday.
The Yankees have been facing a growing list of injuries in their starting rotation. Jazz Chisholm Jr. was recently sidelined for 4-6 weeks due to a high-grade oblique strain, and other key pitchers like Gerrit Cole, Luis Gil, and Marcus Stroman are also out with various injuries.
