Before the start of the season, many had already written off the Yankees’ title hopes. After losing superstar Juan Soto to the cross-town Mets in a record-breaking deal, there was a sense that the Bronx Bombers had missed their shot. But fast-forward a few months, and it’s clear the Yanks haven’t just survived without Soto, they have thrived.
Aaron Judge has stepped up as the clear leader, delivering MVP-level performance. The Soto departure also gave New York the financial freedom to sign Max Fried to a $218 million deal, which has turned out to be a masterstroke. He currently ranks second in MLB with a 1.92 ERA over 108 innings.
With the Yankees sitting atop the standings, it would be easy to assume the team is content with the roster at the trade deadline. But according to WFAN radio host Chris McMonigle, that may not be the case.

“There’s a very good chance that either Spencer Jones or Jasson Dominguez gets traded at this deadline,” McMonigle said on the show. “If the deadline breaks the right way and a player worth it is available, those guys are on the table.”
Will The Yankees Trade Their Top Prospect Spencer Jones?

It looks highly unlikely, considering the season both players are having. Spencer Jones is having a breakout season. The 24-year-old slashed a .272 average, clubbing 17 home runs despite a 33.7% strikeout rate for Double-A Somerset. He was recently promoted to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Meanwhile, Dominguez, who made his MLB debut in 2023, has bounced back from Tommy John surgery and is quietly putting together a productive season. The 22-year-old switch-hitter is slashing .253 average with six home runs and 12 stolen bases.
But if recent NBA trends are any indication, nothing should be off the table. So it wouldn’t be too surprising if the Yankees take a page from that playbook and just go for it. The Yanks are ranked No.5 in the week 13 MLB power rankings.
