With Ilia Topuria now crowned the new lightweight champion, the landscape of the division has shifted dramatically. Contenders are lining up to challenge “El Matador,” from veterans like Justin Gaethje to rising stars like Paddy Pimblett. One of the most talked-about names in that mix is Arman Tsarukyan. While Joe Rogan mistakenly interpreted Topuria’s post-fight comments as a callout for Pimblett, Tsarukyan has taken a different stance, accusing the champ of dodging him.
Recently, Topuria claimed Tsarukyan looked scared after witnessing his knockout win over Charles Oliveira, suggesting the Armenian fighter was relieved he wasn’t the one in the Octagon that night. According to Topuria, Arman was supposed to be the backup and felt lucky that nothing happened to Charles.
Tsarukyan quickly fired back, accusing Topuria of ducking the real challenge. He said running from the true contender only shows fear, and deep down, Topuria knows precisely what would happen if they ever faced off. For Tsarukyan, the silence speaks volumes, and he believes Topuria is avoiding the real threat.
“Running from the real contender only proves one thing – you’re scared. Deep down, you know exactly what happens if you ever step in there with me,” he said.

UFC Legend Feels Ilia Topuria Can Become Next Jon Jones

Matt Brown believes Topuria is nearing the level of greatness where comparisons to legends like Jones become valid. In his view, if ‘El Matador’ can defeat top-tier contenders like Tsarukyan, or potentially face Islam Makhachev or Jack Della Maddalena, the conversation around his legacy shifts dramatically. Brown sees Topuria’s true test in the division’s elite and wants to see those high-stakes matchups happen sooner rather than later.
