Colby Covington has recently expressed his opinions on the Ilia Topuria vs. Islam Makhachev bout. Since Topuria vacated the UFC featherweight title, speculation about his future has been increasing. According to rumors, ‘El Matador’ will be pitted against the lightweight champion, Islam Makhachev. As many critics and experts sided with Makhachev, Colby Covington seems to have an entirely different notion.
In a recent appearance on the ‘Red Hawk Recap’, Covington mentioned that Makhachev has his weakness. For example, Covington referred to the Dagestani fighter’s first bout against Alexander Volkanovski and his recent bout with Dustin Poirier.
“I think [Topuria] has the ability to upset him. That first Makhachev-Volkanovski fight was really close. A lot of people thought that Volkanovski won that fight, so I think that the blueprint is out there for Makhachev. I didn’t think he looked that good in the last fight versus Dustin [Poirier]. He looked beatable. He didn’t look like, invincible, so I think that would be an interesting fight,” said Covington.
Speaking further on the topic, Covington stated that the key would be wrestling. If Makhachev manages to take Topuria down and maintain ground control, Topuria might be in trouble. Meanwhile, Topuria has been getting more praise lately. UFC presenter Megan Olivi stated recently why ‘El Matador’ could be a big thing.

“Ilia Topuria. I’m a big fan of this guy’s star power. I think being able to see somebody who can carry themselves in multiple languages for an international company. Not only does he have the English language skills to appeal to everybody who can understand him in those interviews, of course he speaks fluent Spanish,” said Olivi.
A lot depends on how Ilia Topuria performs in his upcoming bouts. Thus, it remains to be seen whether he can carry on with the momentum.
