Ilia Topuria solved the UFC’s star power dilemma. At UFC 317, he knocked out Charles Oliveira and made history by becoming a two-division champion. However, MMA legend Demetrious Johnson believes Topuria might retire at his peak, much like Khabib Nurmagomedov.
Topuria’s performance was nothing short of exceptional. His first-round knockout of Oliveira clearly showed why he’s worthy of the lightweight title. His resume speaks volumes, with victories over top-tier opponents like Max Holloway, Alexander Volkanovski, and, most recently, Charles Oliveira.
At this rate, Demetrious Johnson believes the Spanish star could reach the same legendary status as ‘The Eagle.’ In a recent video posted on YouTube by ‘MightyMouse,’ Johnson said:
“I think you’re going to see him 3–4 more times, maybe 5 max, and he’s gonna disappear. Undefeated, he could be a potential Khabib. It’s like, ‘I’m done, don’t need to prove anything.'”

The Dagestani legend retired at his peak with a flawless 29-0 record. While many hoped he would make a comeback, he never did. Whether fans will witness Ilia Topuria follow a similar path remains uncertain.

Topuria has now become a two-division champion, following in the footsteps of Conor McGregor and achieving similar success in the UFC. The Spanish fighter again showed that the spotlight doesn’t shake him, staying composed and delivering exactly what he promised with a first-round knockout of Charles Oliveira at UFC 317.
With that performance, the UFC has another rising superstar. After finishing legends like Alexander Volkanovski, Max Holloway, and now Oliveira, Topuria has climbed to the top of this month’s pound-for-pound rankings. This achievement marks a moment of true greatness, earning two titles in a single fight.
Fans eagerly await his next title defense, with top contenders like Arman Tsarukyan and Justin Gaethje eyeing the shot. Interestingly, a post-fight face-off between Topuria and Paddy Pimblett also grabbed attention. One thing is clear: the lightweight division has a serious threat in Ilia Topuria.
