Jack Della Maddalena might just pull off the impossible! After beating the likes of Belal Muhammad and Della Maddalena is currently on a high. But he has already returned to his gym recently as the Aussie braces for his first title defense. And while the general consensus sees him losing his belt to Islam Makhachev, Robert Whittaker thinks otherwise.
Speaking in an episode of the ‘Submission Radio’ podcast, Whittaker stated that he believes in Della Maddalena. And this belief does not come out of nowhere. Whittaker pointed out that Della Maddalena has got the better of some really fine athletes.
Initially, it was Gilbert Burns, and then Belal Muhammad. On both occasions, the odds were significantly against the Aussie. But Della Maddalena defied the odds and came on top both times. Thus, Whittaker thinks that he might just pull off a shocker this time around as well.
“That’s always the question everybody asks when anybody is moving up or down a division, there are so many unknowns involved. But saying that, I think Islam can do everything that Belal does, but way better. I thought Jack handily had the fight, but it was a fight. I don’t think it’ll be an easy fight for Jack, but I believe in Jack. He’s got that X-factor, he’s got that hunger there. Just like with Belal, just like with Gilbert Burns, I think he can do the impossible,” said Whittaker.
Surely, Whittaker dropped a bold prediction. After all, it is not that easy to fend off Islam Makhachev. Makhachev has proven himself time and again and has gone up against quality fighters like Alexander Volkanovski and Dustin Poirier. But Della Maddalena seems to be pretty much egged up as well.

Jack Della Maddalena is soon gaining a reputation as one of the fiercest strikers in the UFC. Having thrashed Belal Muhammad, the Aussie is now up against the daunting challenge of Islam Makhachev. However, this does not bother Della Maddalena’s coach, Ben Vickers, much. In a recent appearance on the ‘Submission Radio’ podcast, Vickers stated that Della Maddalena could very well KO Makhachev.
“I’ve never watched Makhachev before as a potential opponent. I’ve always just enjoyed him fighting because he’s brilliant to watch, but I think Jack will knock him out. Poirier only hit (Makhachev) once in the first round, and when he got the takedown afterwards, he was wincing and rubbing his eye,” said Vickers.
Thus, with things taking quite an interesting turn, it now remains to be seen how things pan out next.
