Islam Makhachev has established himself as one of the stalwarts of MMA. Guided by the legendary Khabib Nurmagomedov, Makhachev has ruled the lightweight division till now. However, he does not seem to be content with it. Chasing further glory, Makhachev is now eyeing the welterweight title. However, despite the hype, Team Makhachev had some disheartening news to share.
In a recent interaction, Makhachev’s coach, Javier Mendez, discussed retirement. Mendez pointed out that if the Dagestani wins against Jack Della Maddalena, there will not be many fights left in Makhachev. At most, he will be turning up for three more fights.
“I’m anticipating we’ll see [Islam] hopefully for maybe another three fights total. Let’s see who’s in the works on that, if we get by JDM,” said Mendez.

Surely, this piece of news might make the fans a bit sad. But on the contrary, Makhachev surely had his run. Ever since he stepped inside the octagon, the Dagestani has been relentless. He has put some of the greatest fighters on the ground. And while there is still time left for his retirement, Makhachev is eyeing something special before that.

“He [Hunter] came to see Islam, and they wanted Islam to move up. They want to make Topuria the champ at 155. They believe he can really sell fights. Islam doesn’t want to give up his belt — he wants to fight at 155 too. Islam can take the 170 title, then return to 155 and hold both belts,” said Nurmagomedov.
