It’s no longer surprising in combat sports when fighters retire, only to return later. Many have stepped away from Henry Cejudo to Amanda Nunes and made comebacks. A similar story unfolds, with one of the UFC’s most dramatic rise-and-fall figures — Tony Ferguson. After parting ways with the UFC, many believed he had quietly retired. But Ferguson has revealed he’s not done yet and is planning a comeback this August, not in MMA, but in boxing.
Speaking to Red Corner MMA in Thailand, Tony Ferguson confirmed he’s far from retired and will return to action in a boxing match on August 30. The 41-year-old, in Phuket as a host for the Hype Fighting show, said he’s also keeping the door open for MMA and other combat sports.
Ferguson emphasized that his mind and body are “A+” and that he’s only getting sharper with time. He noted improvements in his physical performance, saying he can now do more pull-ups and push-ups, showing no signs of slowing down.
Indeed, walking away is never easy for athletes who have dedicated their entire lives to the sport. Even when they step away, the sport never truly leaves them. This emotional paradox often pulls them back into the game, chasing that same fire they once had.
But more often than not, they eventually realize that the spark isn’t the same, the body slows down, the timing fades, and the comeback doesn’t always match the glory days they’re trying to relive.

With his upcoming boxing return in August, Ferguson plans to explore other combat sports, including baseball. He remains confident in his physical abilities, claiming he can still outperform most athletes in speed, strength, and endurance. For ‘El Cucuy’, the competitive fire is still burning, and he’s not done proving it.
After a legendary yet turbulent MMA run, he now looks to turn the page with a fresh start in boxing. Given his unorthodox style and relentless mindset, it will be interesting to see how his boxing career unfolds and whether he can find new success in a different combat sports arena.
