There’s no doubt that Islam Makhachev’s potential move to welterweight has become one of the hottest topics in the UFC right now. Many believe it could mark the beginning of another dominant run just like his reign in the lightweight division. Adding to the conversation, Tony Ferguson recently shared his thoughts on the move. He believes Makhachev could indeed dominate at welterweight, citing his superior grappling skills, even comparing them favorably to those of Khabib Nurmagomedov.
Talking to Helen Yee, Ferguson says he feels Makhachev will succeed at welterweight, calling the move a smart step toward building his legacy. He pointed out that Makhachev has already defended his lightweight title four times and consistently made weight, proving his discipline and dominance at 155.
Ferguson also made a bold statement, saying Makhachev is a better grappler than Khabib. Confident in Islam’s skills, Tony expects him to hold his own and possibly thrive in the 170-pound division.
“I think that’s a smart move. When you go up, you’re gonna try to build a legacy — you’re gonna do certain things like that. I think Makhachev is a better grappler than Khabib, honestly. I think Islam’s not gonna do so bad at 170,” he said.
Indeed, it will be fascinating to see how Islam Makhachev fares against Jack Della Maddalena, who appears to be his next major challenge in the welterweight division.
