Islam Makhachev has emerged as one of the biggest names in modern-day UFC. Taking a cue from his mentor, Khabib Nurmagomedov, Makhachev has been dominating the MMA realm for a long time now. Over the course of his career, the Dagestani fighter has repeatedly proved his mettle against quality opponents. Thus, heaping praise on him, Makhachev’s coach, Javier Mendez, made some interesting comparisons.
In a recent statement, Mendez stated that Makhachev is one of the best lightweight fighters of all time. His well-rounded nature and technically sound fighting have been pivotal in extending his longevity as a champion. Going one step further, Mendez opined that the Dagestani might very well outshine the likes of Demetrious Johnson and Jon Jones as the UFC GOAT.
“I’ve been saying Islam is the most well-rounded fighter in the lightweight division… There are two guys that are in contention for the title, and that is Jon Jones and Demetrious Johnson, but having Islam in that category is unbelievable because at the rate he’s going, if he continues, he could very well end up becoming the GOAT,” said Mendez.

However, Mendez also opined that Johnson is still the best lightweight of all time, and Makhachev still needed a significant amount of work to match his level. Meanwhile, this was not the only praise coming from Makhachev’s coach. Mendez recently praised the Dagestani’s ability to adapt quickly.

Javier Mendez revealed the secret of Makhachev’s success. He opined that the Dagestani fighter has the ability to adapt to any situation at his will, and he does all this in real time. Mendez stated that Makhachev can often change his strategy and fighting style mid-fight, which gives him a significant edge over the others. The only other fighter in the UFC with this much adaptability is Alex Pereira.

“The only one that’s like that, I think, is Pereira. He’s the one that will take two, three weeks’ notice. The number two for me is Islam. Islam will take anybody too, but, you know, he’ll take a little bit more time. But Alex is a G, man! I don’t think there’s ever been anyone like that I’ve ever seen in championship history,” Mendez said on ‘Submission Radio.’
Surely, with all the praises coming in, it remains to be seen how long Makhachev can continue his success story in the UFC.
