Dricus Du Plessis is in a bothersome spot at the moment. Having retained his middleweight title successfully, Du Plessis was all set to defend his championship for the third time. Touted to square off against Khamzat Chimaev at UFC 317, ‘Stillknocks’ suffered a serious setback. Incurring an injury, Du Plessis will now no longer be able to continue with the fight. Thus, it now looks like the UFC will opt to get an interim title fight next for the middleweight division. And this is what UFC legend Daniel Cormier has a problem with.
In a recent update, it was revealed that Chimaev might be getting an interim title matchup. With his probable opponent being Caio Borralho, Cormier feels that there is no need for an immediate interim belt, especially considering that Du Plessis fought only a couple of months back.
“Had this happened ten years ago, Dricus du Plessis gets hurt after fighting Sean Strickland only a couple of months ago… He fought him in February – he gets hurt, nobody would have said anything. There would not have been a whisper about an interim championship but because interim titles are easier to access today than they were before, everybody calls for it,” said Cormier.
DC also mentioned how he felt that giving an interim title shot would be unjust for Du Plessis. Lashing out at the UFC, the former champ also termed it as the most ‘unjust’ interim title in the history of the UFC. Meanwhile, if the fight had taken place, Renier De Ridder chimed in on who would have come out on the winning side.
Renier De Ridder Gives His Verdict On Dricus Du Plessis-Khamzat Chimaev Matchup

UFC star Renier De Ridder has trained with both Khamzat Chimaev and Dricus Du Plessis. Thus, having a fair idea of how both the fighters go about their business, Ridder picked a firm favorite among the two middleweight stalwarts.

“I’ve trained with both of them, and I’d say, especially in a five-round fight, Khamzat’s most likely gonna come out guns blazing again, shoot right away. But Dricus is not that easy to take down. He moves very well, although it looks a bit funny sometimes. His footwork is not that bad, he gets out, he circles pretty well,” said Ridder.
Surely, this would have been considered an apt take on the rivalry. However, with things getting revised now, it remains to be seen what happens next.
