MMA is one of the most dangerous sports, not just inside the cage, but also during training, where injuries are common and often severe. One of the most frequent issues fighters face is staph infections, caused by Staphylococcus aureus bacteria entering through cuts or abrasions. UFC fighter Cory Sandhagen recently opened up about a terrifying moment when a staph infection in his knee became so serious, he feared for his life and called his wife for comfort, believing he might die.
Sandhagen recalled a terrifying experience with a staph infection in his knee that left him fearing for his life. While lying in bed, overwhelmed by pain and swelling, he reached out to his wife for support, struggling with the fear that he might not make it. The infection had become severe and internal, making the situation even more dangerous. It was a deeply unsettling moment for the fighter, highlighting just how serious and unpredictable staph infections can be.
“I freaked out during with my knees. Because I remember I was lying on the bed I called my wife and said on the phone, ‘can you be on the phone? Because I’m afraid to die’. It got really scary. It was super swollen. And…It was inside of me. So that wasn’t good,” he said.
