Danica Patrick didn’t hold back this week when she took aim at Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs. The former NASCAR driver, now a media personality and entrepreneur, used her Instagram account to share a pointed message about Hobbs’ recent veto of a bill aimed at restricting Chinese land purchases near U.S. military sites.
Patrick reposted a news headline detailing the governor’s decision and added a short but scathing message: “She’s the worst.” That three-word jab quickly gained traction online as critics piled on Hobbs for her controversial move.
Arizona Bill Sparks Political Firestorm

The backlash centers on Senate Bill 1109, which would have barred the Chinese government and its state-owned enterprises from acquiring property near military installations in Arizona. Governor Hobbs, who took office in January 2023, vetoed the measure earlier this week. She argued that the bill was “ineffective at counter-espionage and does not directly protect our military assets.”
Her decision drew sharp criticism from state lawmakers and national figures alike. Senate Majority Leader Janae Shamp, the bill’s sponsor, called Hobbs a “disgrace.” Michael Lucci, founder and CEO of State Armor Action, said the veto puts national security at risk.
“Governor Hobbs’s veto of SB 1109 hangs an ‘Open for the CCP’ sign on Arizona’s front door,” Lucci told Fox News Digital. “Allowing Communist China to buy up land near our critical assets is a national security risk, plain and simple.”
Among those assets are Luke Air Force Base, the Palo Verde nuclear power plant, and the fast-growing Taiwan Semiconductor facility in Arizona. Supporters of the bill argue that foreign influence, especially from adversarial governments, poses a serious threat to sensitive infrastructure.

Patrick’s criticism may come from a place of patriotism, but she also echoes the sentiment of many Arizona residents. Online, some have begun referring to the governor as “Commie Katie,” a nickname gaining steam among the bill’s supporters.
Whether Hobbs responds directly to Patrick or her critics remains to be seen. But with public figures like Patrick weighing in and national security on the line, this fight isn’t likely to cool off anytime soon.
