NASCAR fans have something to get fired up about. More than three decades after Days of Thunder raced into theaters, the idea of a sequel is finally gaining traction, and Tom Cruise might just be behind the wheel again.
The 1990 film, which paired high-octane racing with the star power of Cruise as hotshot driver Cole Trickle, became a cultural hit and raked in $157.9 million worldwide. With Tony Scott in the director’s chair and Cruise leading the charge, Days of Thunder became one of the defining motorsports films of its time.
Now, with Top Gun: Maverick proving that legacy sequels can win big, Cruise and his longtime collaborator Christopher McQuarrie are seriously considering revisiting the world of NASCAR.
Cruise And McQuarrie Signal Green Light Potential

In a recent interview, Cruise opened up about the projects on his radar after wrapping up the upcoming Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning. While promoting the film, Cruise made it clear he’s ready to shift gears away from Ethan Hunt and explore new and old characters. “We’re discussing Days of Thunder and Top Gun: Maverick,” Cruise said. “There’s numerous other films that we’re actively working on right now.” He also revealed that he just finished filming a project with The Revenant director Alejandro Iñárritu, calling it an “extraordinary experience.”
Meanwhile, McQuarrie, the director behind the Mission: Impossible sequels, added more fuel to the fire. On the Happy Sad Confused podcast, he didn’t hesitate when asked about a Days of Thunder sequel. “Totally know what the premise of the movie would be,” McQuarrie said. “In five seconds I knew what the premise would be. I looked at the response to Top Gun: Maverick and immediately turned to Tom and said, ‘Days of Thunder.’”
While Paramount Pictures has yet to make anything official, the growing buzz suggests something could soon shift. Cruise’s appearance at the British Grand Prix in 2022 only added to speculation, especially among fans who remember the roar of Cole Trickle’s stock car on the big screen.

If a sequel does get the green light, it wouldn’t just mark a return to the track- it could also tap into a new generation of NASCAR fans. For now, the engine’s warming up. Whether or not it hits the gas is up to Paramount.
