Fernando Alonso’s 2025 season has gone from bad to worse.
The F1 champion had a frightening moment at Bahrain International Circuit.
On Friday, just two laps into Free Practice 2 for the Bahrain Grand Prix, Fernando Alonso radioed Aston Martin to inform his team of his steering wheel problems. It was switching off on its own.
In the final corner, before Alonso made it to the pits, the steering wheel separated from the column in his hands.
“Change the steering wheel,” Alonso said. “There’s a problem with the steering wheel; it’s switching off.”

Alonso managed to reattach the wheel and make his way into the pitlane, where he returned to the Aston Martin garage to inspect the issue.

Luckily for him, he wasn’t driving too fast, and the run-off area was quite large, so he could coast into it and avoid a huge wreck.
F1 Champion Fernando Alonso Explains Bizarre Steering Wheel Incident
Fernando Alonso suffered a bizarre issue with his steering wheel during the second practice session in Bahrain after he reported to his team that he had a loss of power in his steering wheel earlier in the session.
Before his team could inspect it, the steering wheel fell off as he turned into the final corner.
Alonso tried to turn his wheel to the right as he prepared to begin a push lap but was forced to go straight.
Alonso managed to reattach the wheel and head to his team.
Fernando Alonso was asked what went on with that steering wheel.
“Yeah, the car was not working, and I could not shift gears at one point,” he told the media, including PlanetF1.com. “I had the dash off, so I could not communicate with the team either.
“And yeah, in the last corner, the wheel was off, so yeah, we realized that maybe the steering column or the wheel or something had a problem.
“The mechanics quickly changed the parts, and everything was fine. So yeah, a moment there, but yeah, thanks to everyone in the garage to fix it quite fast.”
