The 2025 NBA draft is approaching, and the New Orleans Pelicans are taking a close look at their options for the No. 7 pick. So far, they have focused most of their pre-draft workouts on players likely to go undrafted, a common strategy for summer league and two-way contract spots. But one name stands tall among the rest: Maryland freshman big man Derik Queen.
Queen is widely seen as one of the top 10 talents and may remain this class’s most skilled offensive player. His recent workout with the Pelicans suggests genuine interest. After a season where the Pelicans needed more offensive creativity and interior scoring, Queen could make a perfect match. He brings power, polish, and vision from the post that few young bigs can match.
The team also worked with Egor Demin, Asa Newell, Nique Clifford, and Will Riley. Of that group, only Damin is talked about as a lottery pick. That puts the queen in a strong position to remain the Pelicans’ top choice if they want someone ready to help immediately with room to grow.

In his one year at Maryland, Queen averaged 16.5 points, 9.0 rebounds, and 1.9 assists per game. He uses his strong 250-pound frame to control the game, finishing with a soft touch and great footwork. What makes him unique is his ability to pass out of the post, finding cutters and open shooters with ease.
He is a suitable option alongside Pelicans shooters like Trey Murphy and Herb Jones, helping to space the floor and create more open looks. A frontcourt pairing with Yves Missi could balance offense and defense, with Queen as the scorer and passer and Missi as the rim protector.
Queen still has work to do defensively and needs to improve his outside shot, as he made just 20% from three. But his 76.6% free-throw shooting and solid midrange game are promising signs. If he continues to develop, he could make a steal at No. 7 of the Pelicans ‘ draft, and with 10 days remaining in the NBA draft, the Pelicans will focus on their draft more precisely.
