Ace Bailey’s draft journey just got more complicated. The former Rutgers star and projected lottery pick canceled his workout and dinner meeting with the Philadelphia 76ers, according to ESPN’s Jonathan Givony. Although the Sixers still hold the No. 3 pick and did not completely shut the door, the decision raises questions about where Bailey will land next.
This is not the first troubled moment in Bailey’s lead-up to the draft. He has yet to work out for any NBA team, a first among U.S.-based prospects in this class. Givony reports that Bailey’s camp is clear about their expectations. They view him as a top-three talent, looking for a situation where he will receive meaningful minutes and opportunities right away.
At Rutgers, Bailey showed flashes of star potential, ranking No. 4 on CBC Sports’ Top 100 prospects. However, he averaged 17.6 points and 7.2 rebounds per game. His physicality and scoring ability are elite, but scouts remain divided on his shot selection and efficiency, particularly his resilience on midrange looks. Now, with teams beginning to question his pre-draft strategy, his stock could be trading in the wrong direction.
Ace Bailey’s Draft Plans Took A Turn
Philadelphia’s decision makers were set to meet Bailey over dinner and observe his workout on Friday. His cancellation on Wednesday raises concerns about mutual fit, especially with the Sixers aiming to rebound from a 24-58 season that included major injuries. Their current core of Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, and newly acquired Paul George suggests limited early usage for a rookie wing, something his camp appears keen to avoid.
Bailey’s draft stock remains high, but it’s slipping slightly. FanDuel lists him at -210 to go in the top five, but his odds to be selected at No.3 dropped from +350 to +480. VJ Edgecombe became the favorite at the spot. CBS’ latest mock draft had Bailey going to the 76ers, though that prediction came before this recent development.
Now, teams picking later in the lottery may have a chance at landing Bailey. His camp could favor franchises offering more playing time and a more straightforward growth path.
