NBA commissioner Adam Silver spoke openly about the rising focus on television ratings during his annual NBA Finals media session. Although the 2025 playoffs saw an incraes in viewership and social media buzz, Silver said he’s puzzled by how often people focus on ratings over the games themselves.
The Eastern Conference Finals between the Indiana Pacers and the New York Knicks averaged 7 million viewers across TNT and truTV, a 10% jump from last year. It was also the most watched East Finals ending in six games or fewer in 11 years. The Western Conference finals between the Oklahoma City Thunder and the Minnesota Timberwolves averaged 5.59 million views. Overall, the playoffs averaged 4.5 million viewers, up 3% from 2024.
Still, Silver noted that conversations often center on ratings instead of celebrating exciting basketball. “On the one hand, I like that people are talking about us. I don’t think that’s necessarily a bad thing,” he said. “It seems a little unusual how much discussion there is around ratings in this league…We’re self-critical, it’s part of the culture around the league to be looking at what’s bad instead of what’s good.“

Silver’s comment highlights the disconnect between the league’s growing success and the constant focus on numbers. For the NBA, the real story might remain in how many people are watching and talking.

Silver called expansion “selling equity in the league,” and acknowledged the potential of underserved markets like Seattle and Las Vegas. He also mentioned international growth, including a possible European League.
While expansion is on the table, Adam Silver dismissed shortening the 82-game season, citing a lack of evidence linking fewer games to fewer injuries. His remarks signal a cautious but open stance toward NBA expansion. As discussions unfold, the league’s future could soon include new teams and global horizons.
