The Atlanta Hawks may be planning a significant roster move. Star guard Trae Young is eligible for a four-year, 229 million extension in July, and the team is looking at how to build around him or possibly move on.
According to Hoops Wire, League sources say that the Hawks internally discussed trying to land Kevin Durant from the Phoenix Suns. Although the Hawks have not hired a new president of basketball operations yet, ownership is already exploring the idea. It’s a clear sign that the team is not satisfied after a rough season and wants to make a big push now.
Atlanta Hawks’ Bold Move Approaching An Aggressive Offseason

ESPN’s Bobby Marks says Young’s extension will give insight into Altana‘s plans. “Young could become an unrestricted free agent in the 2026 offseason without an extension if the player’s option is declined,” Marks wrote. He also noted that Brooklyn and Sacramento are among the few teams with the space and need for a player like Young if Atlanta ever considers trading him.
For now, though, the Hawks seem more focused on adding help rather than starting over. Their interest in Durant shows they want to win soon and make a big splash. While no deal is in the works yet, Atlanta’s early talks show they are serious about making a major move.
Getting Durant would mean moving other pieces on the roster. It may be tricky without a front-office leader, but ownership involvement suggests they are ready to take risks. If Durant becomes available, the Hawks could become a real contender to land him.
The key question is whether Trae Young will sign his extension right now. What the Hawks do next will likely depend on that. One thing is clear: Atlanta is preparing for a hectic and possibly dramatic offseason.
