The Atlanta Hawks made a bold start to their offseason plans. They secured all-star center Kristaps Porzingis in a three-team trade with the Boston Celtics and Brooklyn Nets. With Clint Capela likely on his way out in free agency, Porzingis is ready to take over as Atlanta’s anchor in the middle.
But Atlanta is not done yet. According to Jake Fischer and Marc Stein of The Stein Line, the Hawks are now eyeing the Minnesota Timberwolves guard Nickeil Alexander-Walker as a possible sign-and-trade deal. They still hold a $25 million trade exception from the 2023 Dejounte Murray trade and nearly $30 million in space below the luxury tax line. The Hawks now have enough room to make another big move.
Alexander-Walker had a solid year with the Timberwolves. He averaged 9.4 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 2.7 assists while hitting 38.1% of his threes. His offensive skill set would fit nicely next to players like Dyson Daniels and 2024 top pick Zaccharie Risacher. Since Minnesota needs to re-sign key players like Julius Randle and Naz Reid, the Hawks are hoping the Timberwolves won’t be able to match a firm offer for Alexander-Walker.
Atlanta Hawks Aims To Balance Both Ends Of The Court

Daniels brings defensive toughness. He was named to the All-Defensive first team last season, while Alexander Walker would offer more offensive punch. The Hawks’ interest suggests they are looking to balance both ends of the floor as they aim to rise in the Eastern Conference.
Atlanta’s front office appears committed to maximizing its current core. After an up-and-down season that ended with an eighth-place finish, the front office seems intent on accelerating the team’s growth. With Trae Young, Jalen Johnson, and now Porzingis in the field, Alexander-Walker’s addition could make a key lineup in a deeper playoff push.
