Veteran point guard Chris Paul’s one-year contract with the San Antonio Spurs has officially come to an end. He is going to be an unrestricted free agent this offseason.
After completing his 20th NBA season, Paul is once again weighing his options. Early reports suggest his future may not involve staying in San Antonio. According to NBA insider Marc Stein, Paul may be looking for a fresh start elsewhere, preferably somewhere closer to home in Los Angeles.
“Chris Paul would be another Mavericks target at $5.7 million, but there is a growing belief that Paul—after starting all 82 games last season in San Antonio as a 39-year-old newcomer to the Spurs—is determined to play closer to his home base in Los Angeles if he indeed comes back for a 21st season,” Stein reported.

Paul remarkably started every game last season and became the first player in NBA history to play a full 82-game schedule in his 20th season or later. He averaged 8.8 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 7.4 assists per game during that campaign.
Shams Charania Says Dallas Is In The Mix Regarding Chris Paul’s Trade Rumors

ESPN’s Shams Charania also suggested that the Mavericks are one of several teams eyeing Paul in free agency. Dallas is set to free up their $5.7 million taxpayer mid-level exception. Charania revealed that Paul is among their top targets.

“The Mavs are expected to open up the $5.7 million taxpayer midlevel exception by signing Irving to this deal, sources said. Potential targets for that salary slot would have included Dennis Schroder, D’Angelo Russell, Chris Paul, and Malcolm Brogdon,” Charania wrote.
Dallas clearly needs more depth at the point guard position going into next season. Dallas Head coach Jason Kidd mentioned that Cooper Flagg will handle point guard duties during the Summer League. Yet, the Mavs still need a steady, experienced floor general like Paul to guide the team through the regular season and beyond.
