Chris Paul has officially entered the free agency market again. Two decades ago, the New Orleans Hornets selected Paul No. 4 overall. Paul most recently played for the San Antonio Spurs, but his contract has expired.
A key reason the 12-time All-Star and future Hall of Famer hasn’t signed with a team yet is tied to his own expectations. NBA reporter Tim Reynolds revealed that Paul is holding out for a guaranteed starting role on his next team.
“Chris Paul wants to be a starter, we’re told, which is part of the reason why he evidently hasn’t made up his mind yet. Clippers still very hopeful he picks them,” Reynolds reported.

Last season, Paul made a strong case for that demand by starting all 82 games for the Spurs. It was only the second time in his 20-year career that he played a full regular season, and he was one of just six players in the league to start all 82 games. With the Spurs, he averaged 8.8 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 7.4 assists per game.

“He wants to play at least another year. Sources tell me that the Clippers are on his radar, along with the Phoenix Suns,” Haynes said.
Paul has deep ties to both franchises. He spent seven seasons with the Clippers from 2011 to 2018. Later, he played for the Suns from 2020 to 2023. Now, Paul is eyeing a return to one of the teams where he made his biggest impact, but only if he’s starting.
