The New York Knicks are gearing up for a busy offseason. After Tom Thibodeau’s departure, the search for a new head coach is at the top of the agenda. However, alongside the coaching change, roster upgrades remain a high priority for the front office. Speculation is spreading about whether the Knicks will resume trade talks with the Phoenix Suns after they reportedly tried to acquire Kevin Durant earlier this year.
According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, the Knicks eyed Durant as recently as the trade deadline in February, making an offer that ultimately did not go through. As the Suns face an offseason of change, there’s growing speculation that they will need to shed Durant’s $54.7 million salary for the 2024-25 season to restructure their roster under new management.
Durant, who turns 37 in September, will likely seek a team with championship aspirations that align well with the Knicks after their strong 2023-24 season, during which they won 51 games and reached the East finals.
Kevin Durant’s potential move to the New York Knicks remains a real possibility, with discussions already taking place earlier this year. Phoenix is looking to reload, and Durant’s departure could free up space for new additions. The Knicks may need to trade key assets, but their interest in Durant is still alive.
Breaking Down The Trade

A potential trade package discussed earlier this year involved key Knicks players like OG Anunoby and Mitchell Robinson. The trade would make a near-salary match with Kevin Durant’s $51.1 million for Anunoby and Robinson, whose combined salaries totaled around $50.9 million.

However, depth remains a significant concern for the Knicks. Especially after they sent multiple first-round picks to acquire Mikal Bridges, in light of this, any deal for Durant would likely require New York to part with more than just a few players.
With the Suns struggling after acquiring Durant and Bradley Beal, Phoenix may remain more inclined to revisit trade talks this offseason to finally make a move for a championship-caliber team.
