The Dallas Mavericks started a new era by selecting Cooper Flagg with the No.1 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft. They already have veterans like Kyrie Irving and Anthony Davis on the roster and plan to blend experience with young talent. However, the challenge ahead is figuring out how Flagg fits into a team initially built around Luka Doncic.
Flagg is likely to start right away. His ability to play multiple positions makes him a valuable asset for Coach Jason Kidd. Yet, the Dallas Mavericks have a crowded frontcourt with players like DeAndre Ayton, Robert Williams, Donovan Clingan, and Toumani Camara. That gives Kidd options but also some tough decisions.

Kidd already hinted at being open to experimenting. “I think when you talk about being able to play 2 through 4 in today’s game. We can have a big group out there that could start,” Kidd said after the draft via CBS Sports. He certainly sees Flagg as a flexible part of the lineup.
The Dallas Mavericks Have More Options At The Frontcourt

Once healthy, a likely starting five could include Irving at point guard, Klay Thompson at shooting guard, Flagg at small forward, Davis at power forward, and DeAndre Lively at center. This group would bring size, defense, and experience to the Dallas Mavericks.
Flagg’s past success with a big man at Duke should help him pair well with Lively. Thompson gives him spacing, and Davis adds power inside. Lively’s ability to block shots and finish around the rim also fits nicely.

Another option is moving Davis to center and adding PJ Washington at small forward. That would improve floor spacing and give Flagg more room to drive. Washington is also strong on defense and can hit threes.
There is no perfect conclusion yet, but the Dallas Mavericks have plenty of talent to work with. Flagg gives them flexibility, and training camp will remain key to finding the best mix. The real challenge now is building a lineup that can compete now and in the future. Meanwhile, Irving made a major contract decision.
