The Milwaukee Bucks waived Damian Lillard this week, stretching the remaining $113 million on his contract in order to create cap space and acquire Myles Turner. The decision caught many off guard. But the root cause appears to be Lillard’s lingering Achilles injury, which he suffered during last season.
Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo was reportedly away on vacation when the decision was made. According to ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne, Giannis was made aware of the Bucks’ acquisition of Myles Turner and was excited about the addition.
“Now, did they tell him they were waving Damian Lillard in order to facilitate this? I don’t know the answer to that. But he did know about Miles Turner, and I think he was excited about Miles Turner because he’s played against him; he knows how good he is,” Shelburne said.

It remains unclear whether Giannis was informed in advance. But after hearing it, Lillard couldn’t help but react to the news. He posted a meme on X that hinted at his surprise or disbelief.
Lillard was with the Bucks for the last two seasons. They reached the playoffs in each season but couldn’t live up to the expectations of their trophy dream.

Sam Amick of The Athletic reported that Damian Lillard is actually thrilled with how things occurred. According to Amick, the move opens new doors for the All-Star guard.
“League sources say Damian Lillard is elated with the Bucks’ decision to waive and stretch his contract, as it puts him in the kind of basketball-first position that few All-Star level players, if any, have experienced in league history. In short, he’ll be able to join the contending team of his choosing, either sometime soon or perhaps next summer, without the financial aspect of the decision playing a significant part,” Amick wrote.
Lillard’s availability has already sparked interest from several teams. The Golden State Warriors are reportedly among the early contenders. As a free agent with fewer financial hurdles, Lillard now has the rare opportunity to choose his next destination.
