Damian Lillard has become the most talked-about name in NBA free agency after the Milwaukee Bucks shocked the league by waiving the All-Star guard following a disappointing postseason exit. But it didn’t take long for contenders to line up in hopes of adding Lillard’s veteran leadership to their rosters.
According to NBA insider Scott Berges, Lillard is scheduled to meet with the Boston Celtics on July 7th. It fueled speculation that the Eastern Conference team could be looking to make a bold move ahead of the 2025–26 season.
“Damian Lillard is meeting with the Celtics on July 7th. That’s what I’ve been told,” Berges wrote.

Lillard is now a free agent. Now, he has the freedom to sign with any team. Adam Himmelsbach of the Boston Globe confirmed that there is mutual interest between Lillard and the Celtics.
Reports suggest that interest in Lillard is widespread. The Athletic’s Sam Amick previously reported that the Golden State Warriors, Los Angeles Lakers, and Celtics are all pursuing a potential deal with him. Among all the interested teams, the Golden State Warriors were reportedly the first to express early interest.

During Game 4 of the playoff series, Damian Lillard suffered a devastating torn Achilles tendon in his left leg. The injury was a key factor in the Milwaukee Bucks’ surprising decision to waive the veteran guard.
According to NBA insider Chris Haynes, Lillard is not ruling out joining a new team this offseason, but only if the situation is right. Haynes reported that the All-Star guard is “open to signing with a team this offseason to continue rehabbing under the right terms and conditions.”
Before the injury, Lillard had been an essential part of the Bucks’ offense. In his last season with Milwaukee, he averaged 24.9 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 7.1 assists per game. Now, Lillard’s next move will depend not just on contract offers but also on finding a team willing to support his recovery process while potentially waiting a full season for his return.
