The Dallas Mavericks put forth an incredible effort to secure a coveted playoff spot in the exhilarating 2024-25 NBA season. Unfortunately, their championship hopes dramatically ended during the Play-In Tournament, where they fell 106-120 to the Memphis Grizzlies. Amid this challenging scenario, DeMarcus Cousins sparked conversations with his outstanding proposal for the Mavericks.
On May 12, 2025, the Mavericks stunned everyone by winning the first overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, even though their chances were under 2%. This incredible stroke of luck allowed them to select the talented Cooper Flagg in the upcoming 2025 NBA draft, setting the stage for an exciting future. However, Cousins has a few alternative ideas that might surprise fans.
“Kevin Durant wouldn’t be a bad move. Nico is already on record saying it’s a three-year window to win a championship, and Cooper Flagg doesn’t necessarily fit that timeline. But Kevin Durant does. I absolutely think the Mavs should trade that No. 1 pick.” Cousins said on the Run It Back show.

“Sources told ESPN that Patrick Dumont, who just finished his first year as the Mavs’ governor, considers the opportunity to be in position to draft a generational talent such as Flagg a “gift.” While Dumont has given Harrison great leeway to run basketball operations, the governor has final decision on all personnel matters.” MacMahon wrote in his recent reports.
