The San Antonio Spurs stuck with expectations during the 2025 NBA Draft on Wednesday by selecting Rutgers guard Dylan Harper with the No. 2 overall pick. The move was widely anticipated, and it strengthens the Spurs’ growing core of promising young talent.
What makes this selection even more special is the family connection. Dylan is the son of former Spurs standout Ron Harper.
Hence, the moment was deeply emotional and joyous for the Harper household. After his son’s draft, Ron Harper celebrated his son’s milestone with a lighthearted and hilarious post on X.
“@spurs where’s the best cigar bar in San Antonio?” Harper joked.

This year’s draft marks the third straight time the Spurs have had a top-four selection. In 2023, they picked French phenom Victor Wembanyama at No. 1. In 2024, they added Stephon Castle with the No. 4 pick. So far, both selections were worthy enough, as both Wemby and Castle won Rookie of the Year in their rookie campaigns.
