Memphis Grizzlies center Zach Edey is making headlines not for his on-court performance but for an off-court misstep. The 7-foot-4 sophomore NBA player has been charged with misdemeanor reckless driving after allegedly speeding over 100 mph in Indiana.
Edey found himself in legal trouble after a state trooper reportedly clocked his white 2023 Kia Sorento going 101 mph in a 55 mph zone. The incident took place on May 1 around 7 p.m. along State Road 25 in West Point, Indiana, just south of Tippecanoe County.

According to a probable cause affidavit from Indiana State Police, the trooper spotted Edey’s northbound vehicle while heading southbound. After radar confirmed the excessive speed, the officer initiated a stop. Edey was a Memphis resident at the time.
He held a Tennessee driver’s license and told the officer he was only trying to pass a vehicle. Nevertheless, he didn’t provide any further justification for his act. Despite the explanation, Edey was cited on the spot and released without incident. The entire interaction lasted under 20 minutes. However, no arrest was made.

Now, Zach Edey faces formal legal proceedings. He’s scheduled to appear in Tippecanoe County Court on June 23 at 10:30 a.m. There, Judge Michael A. Morrissey will preside over his case.

While the charge is a misdemeanor, the situation brings unwanted attention to the young center’s burgeoning NBA career. This incident, though not resulting in any physical harm or confrontation, adds an off-court challenge for Edey.
Edey just ended his first season with the Grizzlies as the center of the team. In his rookie season, he appeared in 66 regular-season games with Memphis. In those games, he averaged 9.2 points, 8.3 rebounds, 1.3 blocks, and 1.0 assists per game.
Edey sustained a left ankle sprain during an offseason workout, which required surgery. Thankfully, the procedure was successful, and he’s steadily recovering as he prepares for another strong season with Memphis.
