The Houston Rockets might get some heat for their recent Cam Whitmore trade, but he’s good for the long run. They recently traded the young forward in a massive offseason move that had everybody having second thoughts.
Houston traded Whitmore to the Washington Wizards in an exciting move. For the Rockets, getting two second-round draft picks is a smart way to build their future while making space for their established stars. However, most of the social media posts have the Rockets labelled as a loser in this trade.
ESPN’s Shams Charania recently broke down what exactly went into the trade. According to him, the Rockets turned down many offers before sending Cam to the Wizards, thinking of a better place for his growth.
“The Rockets worked with Whitmore and his reps at WME Basketball over the past few weeks on a new home. Houston officials had multiple offers on the table for Whitmore but wanted to see him go somewhere that gave him a legitimate chance to thrive in his career,” Charania wrote on ESPN.

Whitmore, who was picked 20th overall in the 2023 draft, has shown some real potential when he’s gotten the chance to play. Last season, he averaged 9.4 points and even had some standout games, like scoring 34 points against the Lakers. Unfortunately, the Rockets’ deep roster meant he didn’t get much playing time, which is a shame because he clearly has talent.

Now, for the Wizards, bringing in a young player like Whitmore could be a game-changer. At just 21, he has plenty of time to grow. Additionally, this could be the perfect opportunity for him to step into a bigger role and show what he can do.
The Wizards are in a rebuilding phase, so giving Whitmore the opportunity to shine could help them build a strong foundation for the future.
Overall, this trade feels like a win-win situation. The Rockets are making smart moves for their current team, while the Wizards are adding a promising young talent who could develop into a key player. It’ll be exciting to see how Whitmore blossoms in his new home.
