At 40 years old, James faces a monumental decision regarding his legendary basketball journey. With his 23rd season on the horizon, the basketball world is watching closely to see whether the iconic No. 23 is set for his last dance.
In contrast to early predictions regarding LeBron’s career, NBA insider Shams Charania said the upcoming season is expected to be LeBron’s last in the NBA. Speaking on The Pat McAfee Show, Charania highlighted the significance of the upcoming season lining up with James’ jersey number.
“Year 23 for No. 23. They have the All-Star weekend in Los Angeles. So, to me, it’s very storybook if that’s the way it goes. But that’s a decision that he’s gotta make. So to me, it’s very storybook if that’s the way it goes. But, that’s a decision that he’s gotta make,” Shams said.

LeBron James signed a two-year deal with the Lakers last season, which includes a player option for the upcoming season. That option gives him full control over whether he stays with the team under the current terms or declines the option in favor of signing a new deal.
Shams Charania Reports LeBron James Will Likely Opt In

On The Pat McAfee Show, Charania also made it clear that James is expected to pick up his player option. If James opts in, he will remain with the Lakers and be removed from the open market.

“I’m told he’s likely to opt in. He’s got a player option of about $54 million. He’s got a massive player option; that’s the plan. There’s going to be some hard conversations that are going to happen between him and the Lakers,” Shams said.
Historically, LeBron has leveraged his status by declining player options. This strategy has allowed him to exert influence over team-building decisions and keep his financial options open. However, if this is indeed LeBron James’ last season, the NBA is about to witness a farewell unlike any other.
