After months of misfortune, something has finally gone in the Dallas Mavericks’ favor following Luka Doncic’s trade. The team surprisingly secured the top pick in the 2025 NBA Draft lottery, despite having just a 1.8% chance.
Since securing the lottery pick, optimism has returned to Dallas, with rising expectations for a strong comeback season. Recently, NBA insider Marc Stein asked Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd who the team planned to draft. Without hesitation, Kidd responded with the name of projected top pick Cooper Flagg.
“We love that kid from Duke,” Kidd said confidently.

Things had gone downhill for Dallas after trading away Doncic. Anthony Davis sustained an injury that sidelined him in his debut game for months. Then Kyrie Irving also suffered a season-ending injury. The circle of misfortune ended with the Mavericks missing the playoffs.
Now, with the potential addition of the Duke standout, the Mavericks may be able to reverse their misfortunes. The mix of experienced veterans and a promising young star could make Dallas a serious threat in the upcoming season.

NBA insider Marc Stein recently highlighted that new developments could signal continued support for the under-pressure GM, Nico Harrison. According to Stein, new majority owner Patrick Dumont has made several visits, reinforcing the belief that he continues to support Harrison as the team’s primary decision-maker.
“New majority owner Patrick Dumont, who is based in Las Vegas, has visited Dallas multiple times since the Mavericks’ season ended with an April 18 loss at Memphis in the NBA’s Play-In Tournament, league sources say. Those visits have only fueled the belief that Dumont is sticking by under-fire general manager Nico Harrison as the lead decision-maker in the Mavericks’ current front office structure,” Stein reported.
Nico Harrison has been in the spotlight ever since the controversial trade involving Luka Doncic. As the general manager who initiated the trade discussions, Harrison has faced significant scrutiny. Reports have also suggested that even the Mavericks’ owner held him accountable for not adequately warning about the potential backlash from dealing away a franchise cornerstone like Doncic.
