After years of post-Luka Doncic turbulence, the Dallas Mavericks finally caught a break. They landed the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft despite having just a 1.8% chance. With their stroke of lottery luck, the Mavericks selected Duke standout Cooper Flagg.
NBA insider Marc Stein reported that Dallas is wasting no time integrating Flagg into their system. The Mavericks expect him to suit up for their first two Summer League games. Even more interestingly, head coach Jason Kidd has plans to experiment with Flagg in an unconventional role.
“I want to put him at point guard. I’m excited to give him the ball against the Lakers and see what happens,” Kidd said.
The early expectation is Flagg would play in Dallas’ first two summer league games: July 10 against the Lakers before San Antonio.

Flagg now joins established stars Kyrie Irving and Anthony Davis on the Dallas team. The Mavericks are envisioning a new-look core that could finally restore their championship ambitions.
While a section of fans have cynically labeled the lottery outcome as “rigged,” the Mavericks organization remains unfazed. General Manager Nico Harrison dismissed the air. The front office is fully focused on supporting Flagg’s development into a franchise cornerstone.

On the latest episode of his podcast, former NBA star Gilbert Arenas offered a tempered take on the hype surrounding Cooper Flagg.
“Right now, he’s a generational talent, but we don’t know if he’ll turn into a generational player. Curry is a generational player, meaning what he did as a player changed a generation,” Arenas said.
If the Mavericks’ vision holds true, Flagg could redefine positional expectations with his athleticism. Flagg may emerge not only as Dallas’ primary playmaker but as a long-term game-changer in the league. It will remain to be seen if Flagg lives up to those expectations.
