Boston Celtics superstar Jayson Tatum addressed the fans and posted a photo from his hospital bed after undergoing surgery on a devastating Achilles tear.
Late in the fourth quarter of Monday’s playoff game against the New York Knicks, Tatum went down with a non-contact injury after trying to grab a loose ball. Tatum was helped off the court, and tests on Tuesday sadly confirmed that he had suffered a season-ending Achilles tear.
Tatum underwent successful surgery on his Achilles, and the Celtics announced that he’s expected to make a full recovery. There’s no timeline on when he’ll return, but Tatum will unfortunately miss at least most of the 2025-26 season.
Jayson Tatum took to Instagram on Wednesday to share a photo of him post-surgery with a thumbs up and smile, along with a message to thank everyone for their support:
The Celtics trail their second round series three games to one and need a win at TD Garden on Wednesday night to keep their season going. The Knicks already won three of the first four games with Jayson Tatum on the court, so Boston faces a tall task in getting by Tom Thibodeau’s group without its franchise player.
Bet against the defending champions at your own risk, though, with Kristaps Porzingis, Jrue Holiday, Derrick White and Jaylen Brown still healthy.

Jayson Tatum’s Injury Leads To Plenty Of Questions About Celtics’ Long-Term Future

Before Tatum’s injury, it was reported by ESPN’s Shams Charania that Boston was going to have to trade away some key players for salary cap and luxury tax-related purposes.
But with Tatum sidelined long-term, one can only wonder if president of basketball operations Brad Stevens will decide to begin a rebuild ASAP. That could mean trading Holiday, Porzingis AND All-Star Jaylen Brown, for all we know.
The Celtics were always going to lose valuable talent this offseason. But Tatum’s injury may convince Stevens to rebuild from scratch around his franchise player.
