The Dallas Mavericks made a surprising move by parting ways with their franchise star Luka Doncic in the middle of the season. After his trade to the Los Angeles Lakers, reports emerged pointing to concerns about Luka’s conditioning and off-court habits. Even team owner Patrick Dumont commented that Luka didn’t put in the same level of effort as other elite players in the league.
Now with the Lakers, it appears that Dončić is making a serious effort to reinvent himself. On the Dumb Zone, Jason Gallagher noted that Luka has “started anew,” with a commitment to improving his conditioning and adopting a more disciplined lifestyle.
“I’ve heard from folks that are pretty honest… that Luka has already begun a clean slate, starting anew, in this mindset of changing a lot about himself,” Gallagher said.

Due to how the Mavericks handled his situation, Luka lost the chance to qualify for a contract upgrade that would have been worth over $116 million. However, he now has a new opportunity, as he becomes eligible for an extension this summer with the Lakers.
Jason Kidd Addresses Frustration Among Fans After Luka Doncic’s Trade

“I truly can understand the frustration, or the hurt of the trade. Luka is one of the best in the world. He was here, he played at a high level. All of the sudden, there is a change. But we have to move forward,” Kidd said.
Reports have also suggested that prior to the trade, Kidd himself had grown increasingly frustrated with Luka’s attitude and approach. This friction reportedly played a role in the team’s decision to move Doncic. Although the trade is now in the past, the sting of losing a generational talent continues to linger among Dallas fans.
