Before the blockbuster trade that brought Luka Dončić to the Los Angeles Lakers in February, LeBron James was already working behind the scenes to improve the team’s chances of chasing another championship. He reportedly tried to convince Klay Thompson to join the Lakers to strengthen the roster. While that move didn’t materialize, the acquisition of Doncic in February gave L.A. a major boost in talent and hope.
Following the Lakers’ disappointing exit in the first round of the playoffs, LeBron was asked if he would play a role in convincing Doncic to sign a contract extension with the team. The 40-year-old acknowledged that Doncic has to make decisions based on his own path, not LeBron’s.
“No, that ain’t my job. I think—I don’t think—I know Luka knows how I feel about him. And ultimately, that trade happened for the future. That’s not for me,” James said.

“Luka has to decide what he has to do with his future. He’s 26 years old. I’m 40, so he can’t be basing his career off me. That’s just real,” he added.
LeBron James Hopes Luka Doncic Stays With Laker

Luka Doncic’s arrival injected energy and excitement into the Lakers team. Later in his interview, LeBron shared his hope that Luka would remain loyal to Los Angeles fans who embraced him after the painful trade.

“But I hope, obviously. Laker fans f*ing love him here. L.A. has accepted him. We love him as a teammate, as a brother. But ultimately, he’s got to make a decision for him. St, I ain’t going to be around much longer,” James said.
This season marked the first time NBA fans got to witness the partnership of Luka Doncic and LeBron James on the same roster. The Lakers are still eyeing their elusive 18th championship, and fans are already dreaming of another season with the dynamic duo leading the charge.
