Cooper Flagg will likely become the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft tonight and officially join the Dallas Mavericks after weeks of speculation. But while most top picks enter rebuilding teams, Flagg is walking a title-contending roster, and Lebron James believes that could be the perfect start.
James praised Flagg’s talent on his Mind the Game Podcast and stated that there was a rare opportunity ahead of him. “I think that he wants to be great,” James said. “He had a hell of a year at Duke. Super athletic, quick second jump, and His jump shot is going to continue to get better.”
James explained how playing alongside seasoned stars like Anthony Davis, Kyrie Irving, and Klay Thompson will accelerate Flagg’s development. “He gets to join a team established with Hall of Fame guys — these guys are like, they’re can give him the whole blueprint while he continues to learn what his blueprint will be,” James added.
James also pointed to Jason Kidd‘s leadership and experience as a Hall of Fame coach as another key advantage for the rookie.
Unlike James, who had to carry a young team in Cleveland as a rookie, Flagg won’t have that pressure immediately. Instead, he will learn while playing a more minor role, which James thinks could set him up for long-term success. Whether Flagg can balance learning and contribution on a contender will shape his early NBA journey.

“It doesn’t matter where you’re from or if people believe in you. You have to believe in yourself,” Flagg said. He will remain the second youngest No.1 overall pick in NBA history, following Lebron James in 2003.
With veterans around him in Dallas, Flagg enters the league in a rare position and comes immediately. All eyes now turn to how quickly the young talent can rise on the NBA’s biggest stage.
