The Los Angeles Lakers are looking for a new key center ahead of the 2025-26 NBA season. After a midseason blockbuster trade that brought Luka Doncic to their core, the Lakers want to reshape their roster to complement their other talent pool. As they have no salary cap space, the Lakers are exploring the trade market to fill this significant hole.
According to ESPN’s Dave McMenamin, the Lakers have already targeted Atlanta Hawks’ big man Oneyeka Okongwu, Brooklyn Nets’ Nic Claxton, and Portland’s Robert Willamns. All three bring athleticism and shot-blocking ability, which the Lakers need to improve.
“Among the other free agent big men L.A. could target are veterans Clint Capela, Al Horford, and Brook Lopez,” McMenamin added.

General manager Rob Pelinka signaled that the team will actively search in both the trade and free agency markets. They are now focusing on rebuilding a more perfect roster around Luka Doncic and LeBron James.
Los Angeles Lakers Head Into Offseason Trade With Limited Salary Cap

The Lakers had many options for landing their starting center, but Robert Williams’ name stands tall. He averaged 5.4 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 1.7 blocks in under 18 minutes per game last season. If Williams remains healthy, he will be considered a high-upside option for the Lakers. Meanwhile, Claxton’s athleticism and defensive versatility make him a suitable fit.

The Lakers have a few trade assets, including Rui Hachimura, Gabe Vincent, and Maxi Kleber, each with an expiring contract of over $40 million. They also have a first-round pick in either 2031 or 2032. If the right opportunity arises, Austin Reaves could be traded.
The Lakers face a tough challenge in balancing their roster with limited money. They must get creative with expiring contracts and possible players’ deals. But their focus will be on the same to find a tight center to boost their core and chase a title.
