The Golden State Warriors made an offseason move that gets attention on and off the court. Head coach Steve Kerr, who is entering his 11th season as head coach, has already led the Warriors to four NBA championships, and now he is heading into a new direction to reshape the Warriors’ success.
Nikolas Kerr, Steve Kerr’s son, is officially joining the team’s NBA coaching staff as an assistant. For the first time, the father-son duo will work together in official roles at the NBA level. The move marks a full circle moment for the Kerr family and a new chapter in the younger Kerr’s steadily rising coaching career.

Nicholas Kerr, 32, worked his way up the coaching ranks over the past several years. He started with the Warriors as a video coordinator and player development coach before taking on roles as a graduate assistant at Cal and an intern with the San Antonio Spurs. However, in 2021, he became an assistant with the Warriors’ G League affiliate, the Santa Cruz Warriors. He was later promoted to head coach, leading the team to back-to-back 20-14 records and fourth-place finishes in the Western Conference.
While people called the move a clear example of nepotism, Nicholas built his career with steady progress and solid results. His time in Santa Cruz showed his ability to lead and develop talent, which the Warriors now hope to bring to the main roster.
Steve Kerr Recalls The Chicago Bulls’ Significance To His Career

Steve Kerr nearly fell out of the NBA after struggling early in his career. Picked 50th in the 1988 draft, he bounced around teams and saw his shooting numbers drop. With few options left, he accepted a non-guaranteed offer from the Chicago Bulls.

“My career was in trouble after my fifth, maybe fourth year,” Kerr shared on the Tom Tolbert Show. “So, nobody called me a free agent, and Chicago called and said, ‘Hey, do you wanna go to camp, non-guaranteed?’ I said, ‘Hell, yeah!”
The move changed everything. Playing in Phil Jackson’s Triangle offense gave Kerr the structure he needed. He did not have to make playmaking shots or high scores; he just hit open shots. He did exceptionally well, shooting 42% from three, and became a key role player.
Kerr helped the Bulls win titles and built a reputation as a reliable shooter. That opportunity shaped his future in the league.
