The Memphis Grizzlies wasted no time in securing their franchise cornerstone, Jaren Jackson Jr., for the foreseeable future. The two-time All-Star agreed to sign a four-year, $240 million contract extension with the team. He was eligible for a five-year, $345 million supermax extension. However, celebrations were quickly muted due to unexpected circumstances.
Just a day after finalizing his massive deal, Jackson suffered a turf toe injury in his right foot during an offsite “live basketball run.” According to a statement from the Grizzlies, the injury will require a medical procedure to repair.
“While participating in a live basketball run offsite, Jackson Jr. sustained a turf toe injury in his right foot, which upon expert evaluation yesterday, was determined to require a procedure to repair. An update and preliminary timeline will be provided following the procedure, but Jackson Jr. is expected to make a full recovery,” the report read.

Though the Grizzlies did not confirm a timeline, ESPN’s Brian Windhorst weighed in on NBA Today. He suggested the injury could sideline Jackson for four to five months.
“They [Grizzlies] did not announce a timeline. However, typically a turf toe injury, like we just saw Darius Garland have turf toe surgery, is typically a four- to five-month recovery window,” Windhorst said on NBA Today.
