The media coverage for the NBA is going in the wrong direction, and league commissioner Adam Silver is not happy.
There has been much talk about the NBA’s declining ratings, format changes, etc.
While it’s good to make changes in order to prioritize fan engagement, the media sometimes gets carried away with emotion.
Silver recently emphasized the need for a shift in how the game is covered by the media, particularly during the intense 2025 NBA Playoffs.
During his remarks on the Numbers on the Board podcast, he acknowledged the media’s important role but expressed concern that it often overlooks what makes basketball beloved.
“I respect the job the media does. But sometimes they don’t spend enough time talking about why people love this game. We should educate people about the game, and celebrate the game,” he said.

However, Silver clarified that his message is not about avoiding tough questions or criticisms but about achieving a balance.
“It’s not a suggestion that people shouldn’t ask tough questions or be critical,” Silver added. “But I wish there was more educating and celebrating.”

“I’m excited about the possibility of replacing the current All Star Game format with an international competition. Please make this happen Commissioner Adam Silver! It would create so much excitement around the world!” he wrote.

This comes at a time when the All-Star Game has been struggling to retain fans’ interest, especially after recent changes didn’t quite hit the mark.
The NBA is now looking to breathe new life into the event. It is tapping into the growing enthusiasm for international basketball. Silver confirmed that the league is currently in talks with the NBA Players Association and NBC to explore this exciting new direction.
