Over his remarkable 22-season career in the NBA, LeBron James has built a legacy that extends far beyond his on-court accomplishments. James has also made a lasting impact through his community work and philanthropy. Now, he is poised to receive an honorary doctorate from The Ohio State University.
Ohio State recently announced its intention to recognize James with an honorary Doctor of Public Service degree. The Ohio State Board of Trustees is scheduled to meet on Wednesday to vote on numerous matters. It includes the proposal to award the NBA icon with this high distinction.

If approved, this will be a significant addition to LeBron’s ever-growing resume of achievements. In a statement from Ohio State’s University Senate, the reasoning behind the nomination was made clear.
“It can be demonstrated that the recipient has made contributions far beyond the expected high standards of the profession,” the statement read.
The honorary degree is often granted to individuals who have made exceptional contributions to society without necessarily completing formal academic education. LeBron did not complete his education. But he is notably the only individual being considered for such a degree at this time.

While James has claimed four NBA championships over the course of his storied career, his work off the court has been equally impactful. Long before he entered the league, he established the LeBron James Family Foundation to support children and families in his hometown of Akron, Ohio.
Despite the recognition from Ohio State, many NBA fans took to social media to ridicule the decision. Jokes and sarcastic remarks flooded online platforms shortly after the news broke.
“Dr. Flop,” one fan mockingly wrote.
