Before the 2024–25 season tipped off, Chris Paul signed a one-year deal with the San Antonio Spurs. However, it’s becoming increasingly clear that his stint with the team might be short-lived. Several reports suggest Paul is expected to leave San Antonio and explore other opportunities for his 21st NBA season.
The Charlotte Hornets was once considered a serious contender to land Paul. However, according to NBA insider Marc Stein, they are now stepping back from their pursuit. Despite Paul’s deep ties to North Carolina, Charlotte is now leaning in another direction.
“The Stein Line has likewise learned that the Charlotte Hornets also planned to make a run at Paul — who grew up in North Carolina — but have all but conceded internally that the former Wake Forest star will almost certainly decide to stay on the West Coast if he returns for a 21st NBA season,” Stein reported.

“The Los Angeles Clippers, in addition to Phoenix, are another of Paul’s former teams that is said to be weighing a second engagement with the 12-time NBA All-Star, who turned 40 in May. Paul’s family stayed in Los Angeles this season while Dad played in South Texas,” Stein wrote.
One of the key factors influencing Paul’s decision appears to be location. A recent update from Stein mentioned that Paul is “determined” to play closer to his home in Los Angeles. This places the Lakers and Clippers as two of the most logical destinations. However, as of now, everything remains speculative.
