Austin Reaves has quickly evolved from a promising role player to a key contributor for the Los Angeles Lakers. He proved his worth throughout the 2024-25 season as the Lakers’ reliable third option behind LeBron James and Luka Doncic. His rise in value now puts the spotlight on the contract he signed just two years ago.
According to a new report from NBA insider Eric Pincus, Reaves is fully aware of the trajectory he’s on. Pincus reported that Reaves is confident that his performance will translate into a much larger contract during his next negotiation window and he will decline his player option.
“Reaves is nearly sure to decline his $14.9 million player option for the 2026-27 season to explore unrestricted free agency next summer, seeking a salary in the $30 million starting range. The most he can extend for ($19.5 million) is far short of that number,” the report read.

In 2023, the Lakers locked Reaves into a four-year, $54 million contract, including a player option for the 2026-27 season worth $14.9 million. But after showcasing growth on both ends of the floor, it’s clear Reaves has outperformed that agreement.
Shannon Sharpe Says Lakers Should Consider Trading Austin Reaves

In a recent episode of his podcast, NFL Hall of Famer and sports analyst Shannon Sharpe suggested that the Lakers should seriously consider trading Reaves if they want to return to championship contention. Sharpe acknowledged Reaves’ growth and undeniable talent. But he argued that his presence alongside LeBron James and Anthony Davis isn’t enough to push the team over the top.

“Yeah, he has improved every single year; he’s a hell of a player. But those three guys are not gonna win anything. Now, I’m not saying you gotta package him, but they need a big. He’s the only valuable piece that they have,” Sharpe said.
The most the Lakers can offer Reaves in an extension would be a $19.5 million annual salary. But the figure doesn’t come close to what Reaves is projected to command on the open market. Meanwhile, the Lakers are open to exploring trade possibilities for Reaves but only to receive a high-level center in return.
