The Boston Celtics’ underwhelming 2024–25 season has already begun to chip away at the core of their 2024 championship roster. One of the most notable names facing uncertainty is veteran big man Al Horford. Horford is set to become an unrestricted free agent for the first time since 2019.
According to NBA insider Adam Himmelsbach, Horford has yet to make a decision about his future. Free agency is going to open on Tuesday, and the 38-year-old is still weighing his options and seems unlikely to commit to a team right away.
“I’m told Al Horford continues to mull potential options for next season and at the moment appears unlikely to have a final decision on the first day of free agency tomorrow,” the report read.

Horford returned to the Celtics in 2021 for his second stint with the franchise. He previously played in Boston from 2016 to 2019. Since rejoining, he’s remained a steady contributor and locker room leader.
Despite his age, Horford continued to deliver solid numbers for the Celtics last season. He averaged 9.0 points, 6.2 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game.

MassLive‘s Brian Robb confirmed that retaining AI Horford is among Boston’s top goals as they prepare for the offseason. Alongside Horford, the team is also aiming to bring back Luke Kornet while exploring additional roster changes via trade.
“With free agency approaching and the Celtics prioritizing bringing back free agents Al Horford and Luke Kornet, league sources tell MassLive that the Celtics are expected to remain active in the trade market while retooling their roster,” the report read.
In 2022, Horford signed a two-year contract extension worth $19.5 million, which covers him through the 2024–25 season. Now, with that deal nearing its end, he stands at a crossroads.
