With the Golden State Warriors preparing for the next season, the permutations and combinations are already being looked upon. And one obvious name that comes to mind is that of Jonathan Kuminga. The Warriors’ star is, in all likelihood, opting for a new jersey to play in. But that might be just one side of the story. In reality, the finances and other variables might make that possibility a little far-fetched.
In a recent update from Anthony Slater from ‘The Athletic,’ certain points were noted. Considering them, the best possible deal might be for Kuminga to remain in the Golden State. To explain further, as per the ‘base year compensation’ system of CBA, Kuminga will be liable to get a 20% raise as a restricted free agent. Unfortunately, this would result in the team going over the cap. Moreover, the incoming salary will constitute only half of Kuminga’s outgoing salary under this circumstance. Thus, Slater has proposed an ‘obvious path’ for Kuminga.
“The Warriors’ front office, Kuminga’s representatives, and the league are expected to explore all options into July… But team sources have been hinting that, because of these market and financial restrictions, there’s a likely world where the most obvious and prudent path is for them to bring Kuminga back and figure the rest out later,” Slater wrote.

Surely, all of these factors will affect Kuminga’s offseason trade talks. And if he really does stay with the Warriors, it will be interesting to see how much game time he can get. Meanwhile, Steve Kerr’s recent comments fueled significant transfer rumors for Kuminga.

“It’s a tricky one because Jonathan obviously is gifted and wants to play a bigger role and wants to play more. And for me, l’ve been asked to win. And right now, he’s not a guy who l can say I’m going to play 38 minutes with the roster that we have — Steph and Jimmy and Draymond — and put the puzzle together that way and expect to win,” said Kerr on ‘The TK Show’ podcast.
